What is boiler turndown ratio?

For boiler heating systems, the turndown ratio refers to the ability of the boiler to operate at lower output levels compared to its maximum capacity. “Turndown” describes the ratio between the boiler's highest and lowest firing rates. For example, if a home boiler has a turndown ratio of 15:1 it means that the boiler can modulate heat output down to one-fifteenth (less than 7%) of its maximum output.

A higher turndown ratio is a big advantage because it provides home heating with much more flexibility, comfort and efficiency. With a higher turndown ratio, a boiler can:

  • More accurately meet the heat demand of the home
  • Use energy more efficiently
  • Avoid frequent on/off cycling (which wastes energy and increases wear & tear on the system)
  • Operate at lower firing rates when heat demand is low (for example during mild weather)

Turndown ratio is an important feature of boiler heating systems because it allows for more precise control and directly relates to efficiency, performance, and responsiveness to heating demands.

Navien residential boilers have up to a 15:1 turndown ratio. In comparison, traditional boilers have a turndown ratio ranging from 4:1 to 6:1.

NAVIEN HEATING BOILER BENEFITS

Conventional Boilers Lose Heat
Condensing Boilers Retain It

Reduce energy costs and greenhouse gasses with Navien high- efficiency condensing boilers. Condensing boilers operate more efficiently than traditional boilers because they have a stainless steel heat exchanger that captures heat from exhaust vapor and transfers the recovered heat energy to the water circulating in the hydronic heating system.

  • stainless steel heat exchangers inside hydronic boilers used for residential heating

    High-efficiency boilers

Condensing technology in the stainless steel heat exchangers of Navien hydronic boilers saves energy, reduces green house gasses and resists corrosion.

  • wall-mounted NHB and NFB-H gas boilers occupying less space than conventional floor-standing boiler

    Small Footprint

Both the NFB-H Series and NHB Series boilers have a sleek wall‑hung design and are substantially lighter than traditional boilers, making installation a lot easier.

  • wall mounted gas boiler with Wi-Fi capability being controlled with smartphone

    Control from Your Phone

Optional NaviLink™ Wi-Fi control system gives you access to your NHB and NFB-H boiler from anywhere in the world.

  • Navien NFB-H high-efficiency home boiler with PVC collars and vent pipes

    Low Cost Installation

Low exhaust gas temperatures allow the use of PVC, CPVC, ULC S363, PP, and SS, reducing installation time and costs. The system can use 2" venting for up to 60', or 3” venting up to 150', for greater installation flexibility.

  • wall-hung residential boiler connected to separate indirect water heater

Capable of heating a separate indirect water heater

To meet all the home’s domestic hot water needs.

  • mercury thermometer alongside digital thermometer showing indoor temperature of 72.5 degrees Fahrenheit

    Precise Temperature Adjustment

Turndown ratio up to 15:1 on NHB and NFB-H tankless boilers – the sophisticated gas flow control system provides a high turn down ratio which reduces energy waste and excessive boiler cycling while also enhancing temperature control for DHW.

Navien Home Boiler Applications

Space-saving design occupies up to 80% less space than a traditional floor standing boiler.

Navien gas boilers are compatible with:

  • Radiators
  • Baseboard radiators
  • Radiant floor heating systems
  • Fan-coil units
  • Hydronic air handlers
Navien eco friendly boilers reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Protect the Environment as You Heat Your Home

Navien primary condensing stainless steel heat exchangers recover extra heat that would be lost in non-condensing boilers to reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. This also keeps exhaust temperatures very low — so low that economical Schedule 40 PVC pipe can be used for venting in almost all applications.
